The 12 Days of Jetsmas: 7 Laine Hat Tricks

On the 7th day of Jetsmas we celebrate a gift that keeps on giving. A young Finn who fills the net more than Santa fills his sleigh. A confident 20 year-old who leaves goalies jock straps hanging like the stockings on my mantle. Patrik Laine was a gift to Jets fans and he gives in bunches. This is why, on this, the 7th day of Jetsmas, we celebrate the 7 hat tricks that Laine has given us.

Hat Trick 1: October 19, 2016

Laine entered his fourth NHL game with one goal and only two points. This game was special from the start as it was also the first match up between Laine, the number 2 overall draft pick the previous season, and Auston Matthews, the only man picked ahead of him. On a cold Wednesday in Winnipeg in front of a national audience Laine put on a show.

It was a slow start for Winnipeg on this night, falling behind 4-0 before the midway point of the game. It was 4-1 heading into the third, and then Laine took over. The 2nd overall pick scored just a minute into the period, kick starting the comeback. After Mark Scheifele scored to bring the Jets within 1 the Leafs tightened up, and held the lead into the final minute. With Morgan Reilly in the penalty box, and 6 Jets attackers on the ice Laine was set up in a spot that would become his office in the coming years. A deflected puck found its way onto his stick and he blast the tying goal into the back of the net, setting up a spectacular overtime.

Matthews had the first chance of the extra frame on a breakaway but was stopped by Michael Hutchinson. As the puck got turned up the ice Laine found himself with the puck on a 2-1 alongside Nik Ehlers. Everyone knew Laine was shooting, but it didn’t prevent him from roofing his third of the game, and capping off his first NHL hat trick.
Bonus Note: If you can find the video of this goal with Denis Beyak’s call it makes it so much better.

Hat Trick 2: November 8th, 2016

Laine has made a habit of torching the Dallas Stars throughout his career. Already with 3 points in his first two meetings against the Stars, Laine took the ice on this night and could not be stopped. The Jets dominated the Stars from start to finish pounding their division rivals 8-4. Laine notched three goals by the mid-point of the second period and would add an assist as well. Kari Lehtonen minded the net before being chased by Laine’s third goal.

The first came on a fancy tip of a Ben Chairot slap shot showing off his hands in front of the net. He found himself all alone in front of the net to put his own rebound away on the second. Laine completed the hat trick by finishing off a nice pass from Mark Scheifele and tapping it into the empty net.It was not a masterpiece, but it showed that Laine could put the puck in the net in many different ways.

Hat Trick 3: February 14th, 2017

Laine showed his love for scoring on the Dallas Stars again when he potted his third hat trick of his rookie season on Valentines Day night. By this point in the year the Stars were definitely sick (love-sick?) of watching Laine score.

Laine opened the scoring late in the first converting a pass from Andrew Copp. He was then held silent until late in the game. But with 5 minutes left on the clock in a 2-2 game, Laine scored what may have been his most impressive goal to date. Gaining control of the puck off a scrambled face off, Laine took no time at all to load up and laser a perfect wrist shot to the back of the net. For many, this was the moment that they knew Laine was special. To be able to change a games complexion that quickly is a skill few in the league have. Laine would ice the game minutes later completing his hat trick with an empty net goal.

Hat Trick 4: March 6th, 2018

Laine would manage only one hat trick in his sophomore season despite scoring over 40 goals. Come the end of February and start of March there was no better goal scorer in the league though. These three goals came right in the middle of a stretch of 12 games where Laine scored 16 goals. Anytime the young superstar touched the puck it seemed to go in the net.

The New York Rangers were hit hardest during this stretch as Laine notched his 4th career 3 goal game in one of the most famous event building in the world, Madison Square Garden. The young Fin was the only player on either team who could fill the twine at all as Laine paced Winnipeg to a 3-0 win while putting his fantastic wrist shot on display. Laine opened the scoring near the end of the first period finding a soft spot in the Rangers defense and walking in, snapping a wicked shot short side on Henrik Lundqvist.

The Rangers did not learn their lesson as 11 minutes into the second Laine carried the puck into the zone and was allowed to walk into the slot untouched prior to ripping his second of the game. Laine again iced the game with an empty netter en route to his 4th career hat trick.

Hat Trick 5: November 1st, 2018

Both the Jets and Patrik Laine started the 2018/2019 season a little bit sluggish. Who would have though it was a trip to Laine’s home country that would ignite the Jets and kick-start them back to being the team everyone expected them to be.

Twice Laine scored the go ahead goals, with his second being the eventual game winner. Both were power play goals from Laine’s spot with beautiful shots. It seemed all he needed to get going was a little home cooking and some friendly faces. Laine sent the folks home happy when he iced the game and completed the hat trick into an empty net.

Hat Trick 6: November 19th, 2018

After starting November 2018 with a hat trick, Laine embarked on a record-setting month, scoring 18 goals and recording hat tricks in three different countries. It was another one of those stretched where it seemed like no goalie could stop the Finnish superstar. Laine’s skills were on full display again in a matchup with the highly skilled Vancouver Canucks.

Watch It Again: Laine Nets Hatty In Vancouver

Laine scored his first shortly after the ten minute mark of the second period when Kyle Connor jumped on a Canucks turnover and fed Laine for a one timer that Laine put upstairs. It was a beautiful shot, fast release, perfect placement, and an absolute rocket. As with many of Laine’s goals, that description perfectly describes them, and it fits for the second he scored in this game, one timing a Bryan Little pass off the rush. It was the kind of play that was virtually unstoppable. A 3 on 2, with multiple perfect passes and finished by one of the best shooters in the game. Laine would once again complete the trick with an empty netter. His sixth hat trick in just 174 regular season games. But November was not over for Laine….

Hat Trick 7: November 24th, 2018

You know, I’ve watched a lot of Jets hockey, have some great memories of Laine scoring, but this game seems to slip my mind. Nothing out of the usual, no amazing feats, no money won for random fans. Just your average game against the St. Louis Blues right? Well, not quite, but stay tuned to the 12 of Day of Jetsmas, and Laine’s FIVE goal performance may show up in a day or two… until then here is what we had the night it happened:
